Rule 1 Always sign a contract first, no matter what. I am a member of the Writers Guild - you need to have produced credits in order to be accepted. I recommend, for romance, working with a lover. They overlap but that's the breakdown. My take: This process worked for me, but I will definitely add a caveat to that. No Ego is the mantra. When you have a partner that you trust, dialogue, scenes and emotional arcs get punched up when you go back and forth. My take: I like this process, but only when I am the one writing. Okay, I'll give you another five points.
Would you lean into the turns with them or would you resist? Though you might still be tempted to hire a less qualified screenwriter; from my experience, it's not going to get you where you want to go.
