A woman is physically abused by her husband until she shows symptoms of Stockholm syndrome, and only then, the play seems to suggest, will they live happily ever after. Desdemona, goes against her fathers orders and marries a moor. Therefore, Lady Macbeth, who used to think that consciousness is only for the coward ones, is ruined by the sentiment of guilt, and her only salvation is death.
Another female character of Shakespeare who is created as being weak is Gertrude, in Hamlet. He places women like Lady Macbeth in the role of power but, perhaps intentionally makes her vulnerable and mentally unstable because he was writing for an audience in the 16th century.
